about

Eye Level of Oakridge is an after-school education program located at the corner of Main and 41st in Vancouver that provides Math and English support to students ages 4-14.

The Eye Level curriculum is designed to provide individualized instruction - which makes it ideal for both reinforcement as well as enrichment. Eye Level offers a customizable program that can help students catch up in school or provide an additional challenge for students who wish to get ahead.

Eye Level's Math and English curriculum is currently being used by more than 2 million students across 22 different countries worldwide.

Eye Level of Oakridge is operated by husband and wife team, Davidson and Krista Sy of Richmond, BC.

Davidson and Krista are lifelong educators who share a combined 25 years of teaching experience: in small groups and large classes, from toddlers to adults, locally and internationally.

Davidson is a B.C. certified elementary school teacher employed by School District #38 (Richmond). He holds a bachelor's degree in psychology and in elementary school education with a specialization in special education. His teaching practice has focused on Learning Resource and ELL (teaching English language learners). He specializes in working with students with learning exceptionalities (learning disorders, gifted education, etc.) and in small group settings.

Krista is a B.C. certified teacher who specializes in teaching English at all levels. She holds a B.Ed in English (Secondary) and a B.A. in English Literature, and has completed TESL (Teaching English as a Second Langage) training. Krista's personal educational experience attending public, private, and Gifted schools equips her to readily anticipate the needs of all types of learners.

PHILOSOPHY

Philosophy

The name Eye Level stems from a story about a teacher who sought to improve his ability to teach. During a trip to an art museum, the teacher knelt down and looked up at every painting. A curious fellow visitor asked why he was crouched down to examine the works of art. He replied, “I’m an elementary school teacher and I’m bringing my students here tomorrow. I was wondering how they would enjoy the paintings they see, so I’m exploring the museum at their eye level.”

It is understanding of the child’s perspective that sets Eye Level apart from other supplemental educators. We believe this is the reason for our successful results, and the key to growth and self-directed learning. We encourage critical thinking, problem solving and life-long learning.

English

English

Eye Level English takes an integrated approach to English Language Arts. Based on the U.S. state standards, focus areas include phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing.

Eye Level English develops students’ mastery of English Language Arts skills to meet the benchmarks as outlined in the state standards. The program helps students build foundational and advanced reading and writing skills with research-based, standards-driven material in a systematic progression that fosters confidence and self-directed learning habits.

Benefits of Eye Level English

1 - English Language Arts includes the development of comprehension and expansion of capacity for written and oral language. Basic language arts helps students acquire rudimentary language skills through language structure, reading, and writing.

2 - Students develop fundamental reading skills through explicit instruction, targeted practice, and oral reading focusing on fluency.

3 – The individualized nature of the program allows students to begin at a point where they are able to work independently and advance to more challenging material with confidence.

4 – Eye Level’s writing booklets introduce students to the four primary writing genres: narrative, informational, opinion, and research.

5 - Students begin with basic picture responses to carefully selected prompts and work their way up to basic sentences, paragraphs, and finally three or more paragraph essays.

Testimonials

Testimonials

My 7-year old daughter takes math with Davidson and she is genuinely EXCITED to go every week and I can see her applying the tricks he's taught her to her regular schoolwork. They are always positive, happy and encouraging to the point where I find them to be a role model for myself as well. They are responsive to e-mails and their facility is inviting, clean and well organized.

Davidson & Krista are excellent, child-centered educators. Their expertise and genuine care for students will benefit any child wanting some extra help, wanting to brush up on some foundational skills, or wanting to reinforce and support current learning in school.
